Trouble-Shooting

Technology Dept.

This is a new Troubleshooting Page if you are having trouble with your computer. These are a few of the most commonly asked questions the Technology Department gets.

Please read if you are having some kind of problem with one of the computers in your room or have a question regarding the setup of your systems.

Also if you want you can click on the link to the left named Help Browser to get step by step information on how to setup software or install updates for Windows, etc...

Q: Why am I having trouble getting on the internet or logged into the network? The computer says there is a problem with my network card.

A: Check the following on the computer itself.

  1. The Network Cable is hooked to the back of the computer.
  2. The Network Cable is connected to the network hub from your machine.
  3. Make sure that the Hub is Plugged into the network cable and that the power is on and that the activity light is on or flashing.
  4. When the computer is powered on. There is light activity on the back of the Network card next to the port on the hub in your room.

Q: When I turn on my computer. It does not seem to power up.

A: Check the following connections for the computer.

  1. The Power cable for the computer and monitor is plugged into a power source.
  2. If you have a power strip make sure that it is plugged into an outlet and/or has not been switched off.
  3. If there is a power strip make sure that the Reset(Surge) switch has not been tripped.

Q: I cannot seem to get my email?

A: To access your email you should be doing the following:

  1. Make sure you are on the computer that has your email setup.
  2. Make sure that you are logging into the network with the proper User Name and Password.
  3. Check the settings for your email and make sure they are set properly. This can be checked also by your building technology person.

Remember this important note. As long as you are in the school where you teach you will always be able get your email as long as you log into a machine with your user name and password and use Eudora as your email client.

If you use Outlook or any other email, then you may not be able to recieve your latest mail. Eudora is server based and keeps all your email on your H: drive. If you use Outlook or Outlook Express, Thunderbird or any other email client other than Eudora in your launcher chances are that your email is loaded on your machine in your room and you will not be able to retrieve emails that you have already opened in another email client.

We are currently working on a web based email solution so not only will you be able to get your email from anywhere you will also be able to recieve it at home via a Web browser. As long as you have a browser you will always have email at that point.

Q: I want email on more than one system. Is this possible?

A: Again, if your accessing your email from one system in the school where you reside then it is possible to get the email to more than one system. The email is setup on the H:\ drive for your login. This is usually accessed by Double Clicking on the Eudora Icon in the Novell window.

If your email was setup locally on your system and you use a icon other than the one in the NAL launcher, then your email can only be accessed from that computer that is your base computer at that school.

Q: I cannot get to a web page that is my home page or other pages that I can get to from home?

A: We are using a Internet filtering software that disallows certain pages from being seen. The software known as BESS or N2H2 updates its database every day for new sites that could be bad for school use. If there is a page that you are trying to get to and cannot get to it even though it is considered a "Safe" page there is a reason for this.

Most Web sites are stored on massive servers that give out not only that page, but may also contain information on that server for other pages that may not be so pleasing. BESS does not only look at the page you are trying to get to, but also the server and its content.
